OGC Nice President Rivère suggests radical restructure of the footballing calendar in line with Qatar 2022
Speaking in an interview with L’Équipe, OGC Nice President Jean-Pierre Rivère sought to propose a radical reshaping of the football calendar with both the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Qatar 2022 scheduled for November to December in mind.
“Of course we all want to finish the season as quickly as possible, but what if we can’t? Beyond this current season, let’s try and look coherently at the three seasons to come. In 2022, the World Cup in Qatar takes place from November 21st to December 18th. My idea is that we adapt to the fact that this competition has been uniquely scheduled and adapt to the unknowns that we are facing today. In what I’m suggesting, we can take all the time we need to finish the current season in October of November, and we start next season in February. We could then integrate the Euros next June and we would finish the following season again at the end of October. In 2022, we have a little break in August and then repeat this formula again to take the World Cup in stride.”
