The transfer situation of the 22 year old defensive midfielder is however complicated. He is currently on loan with Belgian side Zulte Waregem and has completely blown up the Belgian first division this season, catching the eye of Borussia Dortmund, Liverpool, Schalke 04 and Hoffenheim scouts.
According to our colleagues, Premier League side Crystal Palace have come in with a sizeable €8m offer for Souhaliho Meité to Lille. The problem? A stipulation in the loan agreement between Zulte Waregem and Lille allows the Belgian side to buy the player for just €400k.
A real mess-up from Lille and Luis Campos, the club’s future Sporting Director, has already been attempting to deal with the situation. He has made a series of offers to Zulte Waregem including future agreements on first refusal on loaning players and a 50% sell-on percentage.
The deal could involve Lille unbelievably paying a sum to Zulte Waregem to release Meité from the shackles of this buy-out clause. A messy situation, but one that Campos is hoping to iron out.
As well as Crystal Palace who allegedly made an offer, Stoke City are also attentively eyeing the situation.
