Euro 2020 play-offs: Nations League to hand Scotland, Republic of Ireland and others a second chance – how it works, fixtures dates, countries involved

The inaugural UEFA Nations League was a huge success last summer, providing competitive football during international breaks and culminating in an exciting Finals weekend which Portugal went on to win.

The Nations League will also come into play when deciding the 24 teams who will compete in Euro 2020 next summer.

Following the international break, 20 teams have secured qualification to the tournament through the usual group phase.

But unlike previous years, the teams competing for the final places in the play-offs will not be decided based on their results from the group stage.

Instead, 16 teams have progressed to a new format of play-offs and will be put into groups based on their performance in the Nations League.
