Your Guide to Sunday’s Ligue 1 Action

Sunday: Marseille vs St Etienne (13:00 GMT)

After Europa League exploits in mid-week, Marseille and St Etienne face off at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday afternoon. The hosts head into this match on the back of a first-leg 1-0 loss at home to Athletic Bilbao and have only won two of their last 10 league games, sitting 11th in the table. Due to the tightness of Ligue 1’s mid-table, there is still every chance Marseille can finish in a European qualification spot, but their form drastically needs to improve.

St Etienne, on the other hand, were victorious on Thursday evening, winning an entertaining tie at home against Basel by three goals to two. They also hold a much stronger position in the table; fourth at the time of writing, and can move into the top three if they win this one.

However, Marseille did beat St Etienne earlier this season; they won 2-0 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard thanks to goals from Michy Batshuayi and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.

Sunday: Caen vs Rennes (16:00 GMT)

Caen will be hoping to put a stop to their freefall as they face Rennes at the Stade Michel d’Ornano. The hosts have been in dreadful form since the beginning of December, winning just two of their last 11 league outings. As a result, they have plummeted down the table, falling from second to 10th, and lost what was once a strong grip on a European qualification place.

Rennes are also in the cluster of teams fighting for a place in Europe next season and head into this match seventh in the standings, two points better off than their opponents. They beat Angers 1-0 in their last league game and can move level on points with third-placed Nice if they win this weekend.

Earlier this season, these two sides drew 1-1 at Roazhon Park.

Sunday: Lille vs Lyon (20:00 GMT)

Lille will go head-to-head with an in-form Lyon side on Sunday evening as the two teams meet at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. The hosts have struggled for much of the campaign, winning just six times in the league so far, but are currently unbeaten in their last four and managed to hold PSG to a goalless draw last weekend.

Lyon, however, are on the rise, and have won each of their last three league games in convincing fashion. Lille Lille, Lyon have massively underachieved this season, but the visitors recent form has seen them climb up to fifth and within touching distance of the top three. Manager Bruno Genesio will be hoping his side continue their winning run here.

Earlier this season, these two sides played out a goalless draw at the Stade de Gerland.
