L’Équipe indicate that the right-back has been signed for a €9m fee plus bonuses, although Marseille indicate the transfer has instead cost them €7.5m, to be paid over two seasons, along with a €1,2m bonus due in three years’ time.

The 29-year-old was the subject of interest from other clubs – notably Chelsea – after an impressive two seasons in the top flight with the Artois club, after arriving from Arminia Bielefeld.

The former Strasbourg youth player scored eight goals and set up another 18 over the past two campaigns, establishing himself as one of the best wide players in the league and earning his first caps for France in March of this year.

Clauss himself was keen on the move to Marseille, which eventually materialised after several bids from the club were pushed back. Lens had allowed him to leave should he find a bigger project that would allow him to play in Europe, provided they received the right transfer fee.
