Xhaka responded by cupping his ears as he walked off and appeared to tell Arsenal fans to ‘f*** off’ as he removed his shirt and stormed down the tunnel.
Torreira, who failed to come off the bench at the Emirates on Sunday, was captured by club photographer Stuart MacFarlane looking visibly upset and reluctantly tweeted the pictures to show how the incident had impacted the players.
“Didn’t want to post these pictures but felt I had to,” he wrote. “This is Lucas Torreira’s emotional reaction to the abuse Granit Xhaka received after his substitution, in tears and inconsolable. Absolute love and respect for his captain.”
