Chelsea claim excellent Champions League victory at Ajax as substitute Michy Batshuayi fires home late winner

Substitute Michy Batshuayi’s late strike was all that separated the two sides on a night where it looked like he had fluffed the visitors’ big chance to win the game.

The Belgian found himself free in the box moments after he came on but fired the ball over the bar, but he made his next chance count.

Earlier, the hosts thought they’d taken the lead but Quincy Promes’ effort on the stretch was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

The result sees the Blues leapfrog last season’s semi-finalists at the top of Group H in a performance that could be a coming of age for Frank Lampard’s men.

The game started off at a frenetic place but the first meaningful chance of the game came in the 15th minute when Mason Mount’s low effort forced Ajax keeper Andre Onana into a smart save.
