For Madrid, who are under the stewardship of a new manager in Julen Lopetegui, the game represents the first in their pre-season schedule and the players will be desperate to impress.

Lopetegui has brought a 32-man squad with him to the United States and, in contrast to United’s party, there is no shortage of star quality. The likes of Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale are all included, as well as new signings Alvaro Odriozola, Vinicius Jr and Andriy Lunin.
Having returned to the club from a loan spell, Martin Odegaard is part of the panel and will hope to impress alongside the likes of Isco and Marco Asensio. Of course, the game will be bereft of the star quality of Cristiano Ronaldp, who has departed Los Blancos for Juventus. Brazil internationals Casemiro and Marcelo are also missing.

Since winning the Champions League for a third season in succession, there have been drastic changes at Real Madrid and fans will be intrigued to see how the new era is shaping up.
For the first time in nine years, Los Blancos are heading into a new season without the services of Ronaldo, while the man who delivered a trio of Champions League titles, Zinedine Zidane, has also moved on.
Youthful talents such as Odriozola and Vinicius have come in during the off season, but the club have not yet managed to recruit a high-profile replacement for their former talisman, meaning there is a golden opportunity for the likes of Bale, Isco or Asensio to stake a claim for that crucial starring role.
The outcome of the game against a seriously understrength Manchester United team will hardly dictate the course of the rest of the campaign, but it will nevertheless be a starting point for Lopetegui as he gets to grips with his new role.
The Red Devils, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back from their humiliating defeat against Liverpool – which drew sharp-tongued criticism from Mourinho – as they finalise their preparations for the new Premier League season.
A final friendly against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in Munich follows the game against Madrid and it could well be the last chance for fringe players to convince the Portuguese of their worth going into the new season.
