Whether or not Merkel clings on to power on Sunday, Germany’s political earthquake is far from over
Germany will learn on Sunday whether it finally has a new government, more than five months after last year’s election, as the centre-Left Social Democrats (SPD) announce the results of a postal vote by members on whether to join a new coalition under Angela Merkel.
But whichever way the decision goes, the political earthquake shaking Germany is far from over. One of the two major parties that have dominated German politics since the Second World War is in danger of collapse — and it isn’t Mrs Merkel’s.
While SPD members will get to decide whether the veteran chancellor lives on to serve another term in office, it will not be enough to paper over the cracks in their own party.
