Auggies dominate in dual win over Waldorf

MINNEAPOLIS — Winning nine of 10 bouts, including seven bonus-point victories, the Augsburg College wrestling team claimed a 41-3 victory over Waldorf College (Iowa) in a dual meet on Tuesday evening at Augsburg’s Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg (1-0 overall), the No. 2-ranked team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association of America Division III national rankings, claimed three first-period pins, a technical fall and three major decisions en route to the dominating win over Waldorf (0-2 overall), an NAIA program.

Defending national champion Chad Johnson (JR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS), the No. 1-ranked wrestler nationally at heavyweight, improved to 5-0 on the season with a 2:49 pin of Waldorf’s Angel Gomez (FY, Las Vegas, Nev./Rancho HS). Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.), ranked No. 10 nationally at 174 pounds, claimed the quickest pin of the night with a 1:27 fall of Andrew Hartshorn (SR, Oklahoma City, Okla./Deer Creek HS), improving to 4-1 on the season. Matt Hechsel (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.) also improved to 4-1 on the year with a 1:50 pin of Mark Tiedemann (JR, Charles City, Iowa) at 197.

Tommy Teigen (JR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS), ranked No. 8 nationally at 165 pounds, used a takedown, two reversals and four near-falls to claim a 17-0 (5:53), technical-fall victory over Cameron Childs (JR, Council Bluffs, Iowa/Treynor HS), improving to 4-1 on the season.

Three Auggies claimed major-decision victories. Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho), ranked No. 2 at 149 pounds, claimed a 13-2 win over Kenny Pero (SO Las Vegas, Nev./Cheyenne HS), improving to 4-1 on the season. He claimed three takedowns, a reversal and two near-falls in the win. Tossaporn “Boyd” Suparat (SR, North Branch, Minn.), ranked No. 8 at 133, improved to 5-0 on the season with an 8-0 win over Ray McQueen (JR, Duarte, Calif.). Tom Kuehn (SO, Fargo, N.D./West Fargo HS), ranked No. 10 at 141, improved to 3-1 on the season with a 13-5 win over Dillon Spates (SO, Minden, Nev./Douglas HS), using four takedowns and 1:14 of riding time to claim the win.

In the only meeting of ranked wrestlers on the evening, Augsburg’s Mike Fuenffinger (SO, Hibbing, Minn.), ranked No. 9 in Division III at 125 pounds, scored a 12-6 win over Waldorf’s Bo Bettinson (SO, Reno, Nev.), ranked No. 16 in the NAIA poll. Fuenffinger used two takedowns and two escapes in the third period to pull away for the victory, improving to 4-1 in the process. Kurt Knutsen (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) had the other win on the evening for the Auggies, scoring a 6-5 win over Waldorf’s Bryce Robbins (JR, Spangdalem, Germany/Bitburg HS).

Waldorf’s only win of the evening came at 174 pounds, as Brock Binversie (JR, Whitelaw, Wis./Valders HS) scored a 4-1 win over Augsburg’s Justin Bowland (JR, Foley, Minn.).

Augsburg returns to action on Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Open.
