Roman Reigns vs. John Cena official for WWE SummerSlam

The main event of SummerSlam is now official.

On tonight’s SmackDown, it was confirmed that Roman Reigns will defend his Universal Championship against John Cena at SummerSlam. The pay-per-view is taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21.

WWE had been teasing that Finn Balor would instead challenge Reigns at SummerSlam, but a contract signing on tonight’s SmackDown ended with Reigns vs. Cena being made official. Baron Corbin took out Balor before Balor could sign the contract. Corbin attempted to sign the contract instead, but Cena ran in and sent Corbin out of the ring. Cena then signed the contract.

Paul Heyman tried to argue that the contract shouldn’t be binding, but Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville told him that it was good enough for them.

On last week’s SmackDown, Reigns declined Cena’s challenge for a Universal Championship match at SummerSlam. Balor then came out to the ring and issued his own challenge to Reigns. Reigns agreed to face Balor.

The build to Reigns vs. Cena began when Cena returned to WWE programming and confronted Reigns at Money in the Bank earlier this month.
