Neymar acquitted in trial over Santos-Barça transfer

L’Équipe report today that Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar Jr has been acquitted, along with eight other defendants, of charges concerning fraud and corruption in connection with the player’s transfer from Santos to Barcelona in 2013. Judges from the Barcelona provincial court said that they found no offence committed.

Along with Neymar and his parents, two former Barça presidents Josep Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell were implicated in the affair. This was along with the Brazilian’s former manager at Santos, Odilio Rodrigues Filho. The commercial entities of Barcelona as well as the company founded by Neymar’s parents were also being sued.

The case was brought in 2015 by Brazilian investment company DIS, which owned 40% of Neymar’s rights when he was at Santos. DIS argued that it had lost part of the transfer because its real value had been underestimated and sought a five-year prison sentence for Neymar and a total fine of €149m for the defendants.
