Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère downplays INEOS attempt to buy Chelsea

Speaking to L’Équipe, Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère sought to downplay the importance of INEOS’ failed bid for Chelsea.

INEOS made the attempt to sign the London club in late April but was ultimately rejected. In the wake of the offer, INEOS chairman and CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe reassured fans of his commitment to the club, despite the late attempt to purchase the former European champions. 

Rivère has now also downplayed the importance of that bid, telling L’Équipe, “When you’re INEOS, you have the means to buy such a club. Buying Chelsea wouldn’t have changed anything for Nice.” However, according to UEFA regulations, it would have made Nice’s participation in European competition tricky, as with Chelsea competing in the Champions League, Nice wouldn’t have been able to compete in any European competition higher than the Europa Conference.

However, responding to that threat, Rivère said, “All of that will become more flexible and we’ve seen other big groups rise, with all of their clubs that compete in European competition. I don’t think it’s a difficulty.” 

On whether he expects Ratcliffe to invest further since the rejection of his attempt to buy Chelsea, Rivère said, “It’s a question of vision. We have a shareholder who hasn’t come into the sport to make money, but he hasn’t come here to lose money either. I hope that Nice allow its owner to experience emotions. We have certainly felt some in the last three years, but globally, it has been a bit gloomy.”
