Newcastle looking to sign Alphone Areola
RMC Sport report this afternoon that Newcastle have initiated proceedings to sign France goalkeeper Alphone Areola, who belong to Paris Saint-Germain.
The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at West Ham, with the East Londoners still having an option to buy on his deal which is valid until the end of the month.
After six separate loan deals, Les Parisiens are looking to part ways with the French international, who would face competition from Gianluigi Donnarumma and Keylor Navas at his formative club.
Since turning professional in 2013, Areola has a century of appearances for PSG. At West Ham this season, he only made the one appearance in the Premier League but was the starting goalkeeper in the Hammers’ deep run in the Europa League.
Areola is a three-time French international, and was part of the World Cup-winning squad in 2018. Newcastle recently came under Saudi ownership, and are set to have a busy transfer window as a result of new-found funds from the Gulf state’s public investment fund.
