The Europa Conference game between Tottenham and Rennes will not be replayed
As reported by L’Équipe, Thursday’s cancelled final Europa Conference group game between Rennes and Tottenham will not be replayed after the original meeting was called off due to swathes of Covid cases at Spurs.
In a statement, UEFA explained that “despite all efforts, a solution that could work for both clubs could not be found. As a result, the match can no longer be played.” The game had been reportedly pencilled in for next Wednesday, December 15th, but this would have meant also moving Spurs’ Premier League game with Leicester City scheduled for the day after.
Tottenham, who needed a result to qualify for the knockout phase against guaranteed group winners Rennes now face the strong possibility of exiting the competition after rivals Vitesse won their final game of the group and opened up a three-point lead on Spurs.
L’Équipe point to competition rules that state a game must be played if the team affected by Covid can field at least 13 players including a goalkeeper. It remains to be seen if the London club were unable to meet this requirement or not. Rennes had been furious that the game was called off having been told it would still progress earlier on and having made the trip to London.
