Liverpool could sign Timo Werner from RB Leipzig – IF striker is willing to accept substitute role behind Roberto Firmino

The Reds moved eight points clear of their closest rivals in the Premier League last Sunday, thanks to a 3-1 win over defending champions Manchester City.

However, managed Jurgen Klopp is keen to strengthen his squad to ensure they do not throw away a healthy lead like last season.

Klopp wants to guide Liverpool to a first title since 1990, while also retaining their Champions League crown, and has reportedly identified Werner as the man to help him to do this.

The Germany international is flourishing under Julien Nagelsmann in the Bundesliga this season, racking up 11 goals and four assists.

But Bleacher Report claim the 23-year-old would have to settle for a back-up role if he were to move to Anfield.

Roberto Firmino is currently the Reds’ main striker and occupies the no.9 shirt which Werner would surely crave.

Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah occupy inverted winger roles on the flanks, meaning the Leipzig striker would have to settle for a substitute role.

Liverpool aren’t the only club interested in the striker ahead of the January transfer window.

Manchester United have emerged as potential suitors despite Anthony Martial’s fine return to form.

And Chelsea are also interested, despite being banned from signing players until the summer of 2020.
