WWE Smackdown Live Results (8/22): SummerSlam Fallout Show

The Aug 22nd edition of WWE SmackDown airs live on the USA Network from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, featuring the fallout show from the SummerSlam pay-per-view (PPV) that went down this past Sunday night in the same arena.
Advertised for tonight: Shinsuke Nakamura responds to losing to Jinder Mahal thanks to the Singh Brothers, and more!
The show opens with a recap video of the United States Championship match from SummerSlam.

Tom Phillips welcomes us to the show.
AJ Styles makes his way down to the ring. He takes in the atmosphere for a moment before welcoming us to the House That AJ Styles Built and pointing out that he is still United States Champion after beating Kevin Owens. He tells the world that he is the workhorse of WWE, and nothing has changed, because he’s reinstating the United States Open Challenge, and it starts right now.
Kevin Owens seems to be the one who has answered the open challenge because he is making his way down to the ring. Styles says this isn’t happening, he won at SummerSlam, they’re done, it’s over. Owens disagrees, saying what happened Sunday is history repeating itself twenty years later, and a McMahon screwed a legendary Canadian out of a title once again. Owens says AJ can’t take any credit for beating him, because Shane McMahon screwed him.
Shane McMahon’s music hits and he makes his way down to the ring. He steps in the ring and gestures Owens to stay back before saying that he wants to address the situation right away. McMahon says that he can see that Owens is upset, but he called the match right down the middle, and in the end, AJ won fair and square. Owens says that he is not going to talk about the fact that Shane, who survived a helicopter crash, who jumped off Hell in a Cell, who gets grazed by a 450 splash and he can’t make it in time to count the three?

And Owens says that he is not going to mention how McMahon physically assaulted him, but he will talk about the clip he rolls of Shane counting to three on the powerbomb before noticing that AJ’s foot was on the ropes and waving it off. Shane says he saw what everyone did, that Styles had his foot on the ropes. Owens tells Shane to focus on his right hand hitting the mat three times.
Owens asks about that idiot referee who counted to three a couple of weeks ago, and his decision stood, so why doesn’t this one stand? McMahon says that he noticed AJ Styles’ foot as his hand was falling for three and he called it off, and so his decision stands. Owens gets in Shane’s face, losing his mind about how AJ is a joke of a champion and he wants his title back and Styles tells them to shut up.
Owens asks if he doesn’t like the truth, and AJ tells him that he doesn’t like a whiny-ass little bitch like Owens. Aj says that he wants a match, and that he will beat him again, he tells Shane to make the match and Owens is all about it. McMahon says it’s against his better judgment but if Styles wants to do it, he’ll be okay with it. Owens talks about getting screwed over and over and wants to pick the referee for tonight.

AJ tells him to go ahead, he can do what he wants, get his mom to referee, a little girl from the front row, whoever, he’ll beat him no matter what. Shane agrees and tells him that as long as AJ is champ, this will be Owens’ very last shot, no more excuses.
We go backstage where Daniel Bryan is in his office on the phone talking about having a few big surprises for tonight when the Singh Brothers walk in. The Singh Brothers introduce WWE Champion Jinder Mahal to the room with the usual big introduction that he always gets. Jinder Mahal says he knows why Bryan wanted him, he sees the value he brings to SmackDown. SummerSlam was a huge international success, and he knows that he’s unstoppable as champion.
Bryan says he sees somebody who can’t win without the help of the Singh Brothers. Mahal says Bryan is just another xenophobic American and he’s really a hero. Bryan says heroes don’t take shortcuts and Shinsuke Nakamura deserves some revenge. Mahal protests that he doesn’t have to wrestle and Bryan says of course he doesn’t, but the Singh Brothers do. Then Bryan books the Singh Brothers in a match against Shinsuke Nakamura tonight so Nakamura can get some revenge for SummerSlam.
Commentary hypes up a women’s tag match that will take place tonight and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break, we get some recap from SummerSlam with still pictures courtesy of the WWE Network.
We head backstage where Kevin Owens is walking and he runs into Sami Zayn, who he says was just the person he was looking for. Owens says that they have been fighting each other or at each other’s side for fifteen years, and people can say what they want about what they have done to each other, but tonight he needs somebody he can trust to referee his match.
Sami says he watched Owen’s DVD and reliving that history brought up a lot of, uh, well, they had been fighting for so long that he is not sure what they were fighting about. Owens agrees, and says maybe they shouldn’t be fighting each other at all, and he knows he’s not busy tonight since he hasn’t done much since coming to SmackDown, but tonight is a chance to do something meaningful, so he tells Zayn to please just consider it.
We head back to the ring where Aiden English calls for his spotlight and sings his usual intro for himself, but his spotlight goes out just as he’s getting to the line about being the Drama King.
English is quickly interrupted by The Glorious One Bobby Roode who is making his SmackDown & WWE main roster debut. Roode makes his glorious entrance and Aiden English is not happy. Roode’s debut match is up next.
Bobby Roode def. Aiden English: Roode starts off strong as he knocks English to the outside. Back in the ring, Roode lays into English with chops to the chest then hits a back body drop. English comes back with a kick to the midsection, then he takes Roode into the corner for more strikes. The fight spills out to ringside where English whips Roode into the fan barricade then hits a splash on him. Back in the ring, Aiden stays in control until Roode comes back with a spear into the corner and a series of chops to the chest. Roode hits an atomic drop and a lariat then hits a Blockbuster as JBL makes a “Beer Money” joke on commentary. Roode hits a spine-buster, then waits for English to get up and hits the Glorious DDT for the win via pinfall.
After the match, Renee Young interviews Roode in the ring, and Roode congratulates Bryan and Shane for breaking the bank to capitalize on the hottest free agent in sports entertainment today. Roode also adds that if you don’t know by now, you’re about to find out that everything he does is big box office, and in a New York minute, SmackDown went from being great to being absolutely Glorious.
Commentary hypes up the Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Singh Brothers match for later and we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break, we get another recap from SummerSlam of still images courtesy of the WWE Network.
We head backstage where Chad Gable walks into Daniel Bryan’s office. Gable says he’s done talking about Jason Jordan and Kurt Angle, and wants to focus on his career. Bryan tells Gable that he didn’t just give Jordan to Raw, Kurt Angle had to make a deal to help him sign one of Angle’s friends. With that, Bryan introduces another new member of SmackDown Live and it is The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin. Bryan says he’s teaming up Gable and Benjamin next week, and both Gable and Benjamin seem excited about the new pairing. Bryan then welcomes Shelton to Smackdown Live.
We go to another area in the backstage where Kevin Owens approaches Sami Zayn and hands him a referee shirt. Zayn says he did give it some thought, and tells Owens he thinks he’ll have to find someone else to help him in his match against AJ tonight. Zayn tosses the referee shirt at Owens and walks off.
Hype Bros make their entrance as they will have a match with the Usos after the commercial break.
Back from the commercial break, the new Smackdown Live Tag Team Champions make their entrance.
The Usos def. The Hype Bros: Mojo starts off strong against Jey with a spear in the corner and a gut-wrench suplex. Mojo follows up with a Stinger Splash, but then he gets distracted by Jimmy in the corner and Jey dropkicks him from behind. Jimmy gets the tag and the Usos double team Mojo. Mojo dodges a splash and gets the tag to Ryder. Ryder brings the pain to Jimmy and hits a running bulldog. The fight spills outside and all four men brawl on the floor. Back in the ring, Jimmy goes for a splash on Ryder in the corner but Ryder blocks with his knees. Jey distracts Ryder from the apron which leads to Jimmy hitting the superkick on Ryder for the win after a short match.
After the match, Jey gets on the mic and he says that they got the tag division of SmackDown on lock and he welcomes Brooklyn to the Uso penitentiary. Jimmy says every other tag team is gonna feel what the New Day felt, those goosebumps, their head on a swivel, like somebody is creeping up behind them. But no, it’s not paranoia, it’s the Usos.
We see Shinsuke Nakamura walking backstage as his match will happen right after the commercial break.
Back from the commercial break, we get another recap from SummerSlam with still pictures courtesy of the WWE Network.
Shinsuke Nakamura def. The Singh Brothers: Before the match, the Singh Brothers announce WWE Champion Jinder Mahal’s entrance as he’ll be in their corner at ringside. The Singh Brothers are both legal at the same time in this match, as opposed to tagging in and out. Nakamura starts off with kicks and the Singh Brothers take a moment to regroup. More kicks and knees from Nakamura, then he sets both brothers across the ropes in the corner for a running knee. Nakamura throws both of his opponents out to ringside, and Jinder is not happy. Jinder distracts Nakamura, and the Singh Brothers run in and attack Nakamura from behind. Nakamura ends up knocking one brother outside, then putting the other brother in an arm bar for the win via submission.
Immediately after the match, Jinder knocks down Nakamura from behind. Jinder takes off his coat and Nakamura comes back with a kick and a Kinshasa to the face.
We head backstage where Kevin Owens is walking and runs into Breezango. Breezango accost him with finger guns. Tyler says that they may be off-duty this week, but they can still be referees. Fandango says they’re smart, sexy, and savvy, and Owens unloads on them and tells them to get out of there without touching the referee shirt. He thinks better of it and calls them back when a hand claps him on the shoulder.
It’s Baron Corbin, and he says if he wins the US title back, he gets first dibs. Owens says it’s when, not if, and he has a deal, which leads Corbin to saying he better be a man of his word.
We then go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break, Natalya makes her entrance to the ring.
She gets on the mic and talks about how SummerSlam will forever be known as the day the glow was unplugged. On Sunday she proved that she’s the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be, and Naomi can wipe the tears from her eyes and take a good long look at what a real championship looks like.
Natalya then says that she is our new and forever SmackDown Women’s Champion and she promises to restore honor and dignity back to the title. It’s no longer glow time, it’s her time.
Carmella makes her way down to the ring, flanked by James Ellsworth, and she talks about how happy she is for Natalya. Jimmy adds that Natalya finally won something, unlike these people, and it only took her a billion years. Carmella scolds him and says that she has to clear the air with Natalya before their match, and that it’s her time, sure, but Natalya is on her watch.
Ellsworth adds that Natalya is on borrowed time, and ends up giving away the battle plan for the night, that Carmella doesn’t want to tag in, and that she might cash in on Natalya when she loses, which leads to Carmella elbowing Ellsworth until he shuts up.
Becky Lynch and Naomi come out next, and we’ve got a tag match.
Naomi & Becky Lynch def. Natalya & Carmella: Carmella and Naomi start off, but before they even lock up Carmella tags in Natalya. Naomi takes control and tags in Becky who tries to keep Natalya grounded. Natalya fires up and slams Becky into the corner, but Becky comes back with a series of kicks. Naomi tags back in and they briefly double team Natalya. Becky quickly tags back in and hits a leg drop on Natalya. Natalya drops Becky into the corner and stomps a mud hole in her. Natalya puts Becky in a sleeper but Becky gets out. Natalya comes back with an elbow to the face, then she knocks Naomi off the apron. Natalya tries to tag in Carmella, but Carmella refuses and jumps off the apron. Natalya and Carmella argue which leads to Becky coming back with a kick to the head. Becky goes to the top rope but Natalya throws her down to the mat. Natalya gets distracted by Carmella again and Becky tags in Naomi. Naomi kicks Natalya then rolls her up for a near-fall. Naomi locks Natalya in the Rings of Saturn but Natalya breaks out. Natalya boots Naomi then tags in Carmella by slapping her on the back. Natalya and Carmella start fighting which leads to Becky coming in and hitting a T-bone suplex on Carmella. Naomi follows up with a split legged moonsault on Carmella for the win.
Commentary hypes up our main event and we head to a commercial break with Breezango in an ad for Domino’s.
Back from the commercial break, we head backstage where Dolph Ziggler is being interviewed.
Dolph Ziggler says he’s back and is reintroducing himself to the WWE Universe. He complains that he is being reintroduced in a backstage interview. Ziggler says he’s been watching a lot of RAW and SmackDown, and says now he knows what it takes to be a star in WWE. Ziggler says that he is going to start singing, playing guitar, rap and dance around like an idiot. He goes on about needing a laser show and a fancy robe. He says he’s going to come out with all of these things and a woman who glows in the dark to escort him to the ring next week on Smackdown Live.
We head to another area backstage where Lana tells Tamina that her ravishing journey to the Women’s Title starts next week. Tamina asks what about this week, and Lana tells her they’re going to look inside themselves so she needs to close her eyes. Lana gives Tamina a motivational speech and tells her to get angry. Lana says Tamina is ready, and one by one they will crush the competition as their ravishing reign of terror begins. Lana says they won’t stop until Tamina gets the Women’s Title and is the most-feared woman on SmackDown live.
We head to another area backstage where AJ Styles runs into Baron Corbin. Corbin is already wearing his referee shirt, and tells AJ about his deal with Owens. AJ tells Corbin that he’s going to retain tonight, and he offers an open challenge every week so Corbin just has to answer the challenge next Tuesday.
Corbin makes his entrance and we go to a commercial break.

Styles hits the fireman’s carry neck-breaker for a two count on Owens. AJ goes for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Owens ducks it. Styles gets Owens in the Calf Crusher, but Corbin feels that Owens reached the rope so he breaks the hold. Styles disputes this and gets in Corbin’s face. Owens pushes Styles into Corbin and Corbin freaks out. Corbin throws a punch at Styles and Owens rolls up Styles from behind for a two count. Styles and Owens clothesline each other and both men are down. Shane McMahon runs in and asks Corbin what he’s doing. Corbin is distracted by Shane at ringside while Owens hits a low blow on Styles. Owens pins and Corbin counts, but Shane saw the low blow and he pulls Corbin out of the ring. Corbin freaks out at Shane and rips off his referee shirt. Corbin hands the referee shirt to Shane, then Corbin heads backstage. Shane puts on the referee shirt and hops in the ring, and Owens is not happy. Owens gets in Shane’s face, then turns his attention back to AJ. AJ chokes Owens over the top rope then hits the Phenomenal Forearm for the three count. AJ wins and retains his U.S. Championship.
